KUALA LUMPUR: While most Malaysians were overjoyed over Google’s Doodle featuring national football icon Mokhtar Dahari, a group of passionate fans of Negri Sembilan football team were in mixed emotions to see the doodle’s design similar to their tifo banner.
A member of Ultras Nogori 9 said though they were happy to see the doodle, they were surprised that the doodle’s design was similar to their tifo banner.
“We all are happy to see the doodle featuring our football icon (Mokhtar Dahari) but we are surprised to see it resembles our design,” said the member who wanted to be known as Waghih.
“We found out about the doodle last night,” adding that their 70 by 90 feet tifo banner design was created by some 30 members based on an original idea that took about a week to complete.
The tifo banner was placed at Bukit Jalil stadium during the AFF Suzuki Cup 2012 quarterfinal match between Malaysia vs Indonesia.
A picture of their design with Google’s doodle was posted on the group’s Facebook account www.facebook.com/ultrasno9ori
The Seremban based group which has more than 1,500 members had created a tifo banner which displayed the picture of Mokhtar Dahari with wordings “Bangkit Semua Untuk Negara” (roughly translated as united for the country).
Waghih added that the Ultras Nogori 9 members got the inspiration from Mokhtar’s picture and created the tifo.
“Mokhtar Dahari is a symbol of Malaysian football and will always be part of our football. We have never seen a player like him,” said Waghih.
He added the group is also not looking for fame but just want to share their footballing passion with fans.
“We just want people to know why we created this tifo. We want to share our passion for football with everyone and how proud we are,” said Waghih.
When quizzed if they had contacted Google, Waghih said so far they have not.
“The tifo we designed is aimed at giving inspirations to players and fans alike. When players and fans see the tifo, we want it to give them an extra push to go the extra mile and try their best,” said Waghih.
The tifo, he claimed, is one way to strengthen ties between communities, fans and Malaysians.
“When we designed the tifo, everyone joined us. No one was forced, it was on a voluntary basis. We hope the tifo banner can unite us as one,” he said.
